Introducing HAMPSHIRE ANTIQUES of Herne Bay, an exciting new hunting ground for everyone who appreciates period and antique furniture - particularly owners of period homes.

Proprietors Roger and Lyn Hampshire offer a selection of choice pieces dating from the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries along with new items of style and distinction. Their stock includes furniture for every room as well as decorative, interesting and useful objects to delight customers who are looking for something different for their home.

Britain is blessed with many period houses whose walls have stood the test of time, and by no means all of these venerable buildings are of the stately home variety. If you are fortunate enough to live in such a place, you will naturally wish to enhance the character of your home with period pieces. Due largely to the fashion for painted 'shabby chic', there has probably never been a better time to buy period furniture.

Here are some examples on the shop floor of Antiques and Almost

Antique trade surveys have revealed a pound for pound drop in price for Victorian and Georgian furniture. While period oak has held comparatively steady, prices for many items are lower than you would expect. At HAMPSHIRE ANTIQUES you are likely to find early dressers, coffers, buffets, etc., alongside stylish furniture from more recent centuries. The display window at the High Street shop fronts a surprisingly large sales area.

Roger and Lyn share the extensive premises with their son, Dylan, who specialises in craftsman made mattresses. Trading as Cocketts Beds, Dylan is carrying on the family firm founded by his grandfather, the late Fred Cockett, almost 80 years ago.

Dylan's business complements that of his parents because he specialises in making all types of mattresses, including ones to fit antique beds in non-standard sizes.

The property, 32-34 High Street, has been in the family since it was acquired by Fred Cockett, who set up business as a mattress maker in 1928. Over the ensuing decades, Cocketts earned a solid reputation as manufacturers of quality mattresses and divan beds. Cocketts had the present building erected in 1963 when it was hailed as a state of the art factory/shop.

Cocketts closed their retail outlet six years ago following the retirement of Fred's son, Max Cockett, who was managing director. Since then Dylan has carried on the family tradition of making bespoke mattresses. Now under family control once more, the shop provides an excellent showcase for both Cocketts Beds and Hampshire Antiques.
